Thia - St. Mary's Food Bank Employee
Thia made some mistakes that led to a year of incarceration. She was released in December 2022 and faced the daunting challenge of rebuilding her life. “My confidence was gone,” Thia shared with us. She never imagined anyone would give her a second chance.
“St. Mary’s Food Bank gave me my confidence back and turned my perspective around. They showed me I don’t have to let my past be a part of my future. Enrolling into the Community Kitchen program was the best decision I’ve made.”
St. Mary’s Community Kitchen program provides support and skills to help people like Thia overcome barriers to employment.
“They taught me fundamentals skills like safety, sanitation, culinary techniques, how to sauté, and how to use certain equipment,” Thia said.
“But it’s SO much more,” Thia said. “I learned discipline, teamwork, and was given encouragement even though I walked in here feeling like a nobody.”
Job placement services is also part of the program. When she graduates, she will start her new job at Gertrude’s at Desert Botanical Garden. “Before the program, I thought, ‘No one is going to give me a job. They are going to look at my record and start me at the bottom. But I am actually going to be a line cook!’”
With a heart full of gratitude, Thia has a message for our supporters: “The donations you give are really changing people’s lives, including mine. I am a prime example of someone who’s never held a job for more than a year and I’m excited about to be working again and being a productive citizen. Thank you.”
